«Another wine to come my way of late is a complete contrast, from Tuscany, the 2005 Antico Podere Gagliole IGT (Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon): beautifully made, unostentatious, good to drink now, better with bottle ageing. The winery’s owner is Thomas Bär, a Zurich private banker. Some time ago, when we visited the estate in Chianti, his wife explained why Bär buys less fine furniture and works of art at Christie’s: all his spare cash is soaked up by winemaking.»
